News BriefsNew SACUA officers electedMembers of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs, which represents campus faculty, on March 31 elected a new chair and vice chair to take office effective May 1. Elected chair was David Potter, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Greek and Latin, Department of Classical Studies, LSA. Elected vice chair was Michael Thouless, professor of mechanical engineering and professor of materials science and engineering, CoE. Potter succeeds outgoing chair Charles B. Smith, while Thouless succeeds Potter as vice chair. Emergency Web site online The Office of Emergency Planning is presenting a revised and expanded Web site to best prepare the campus community to respond to unexpected events. The site, www.umemergencymanagement.umich.edu, has information on updated campus emergency procedures and other documents, such as protocols for response to floods and food-borne illnesses, and links to additional University Web sites including Pandemic Flu and Emergency Alert. The site includes a 20-section flipchart of emergency procedures, which include building evacuations and fires, bomb threats, active shooters, hazardous materials spills and medical emergencies. The site also provides templates for unit-level emergency planning. Regents meeting April 17 The Board of Regents will have its monthly meeting at 3 p.m. April 17 in the Regents Room of the Fleming Administration Building. Public comments on agenda items will be taken prior to their consideration. Comments on nonagenda items will follow the regular business agenda. English classes for international families, students The Northwood Community English Language Program is offering registration for classes for the families of international students, faculty and staff. Registration is now taking place for spring and summer semester classes for children, teens and adults. Native speakers of English are invited volunteer to aid teaching. Record to publish commencement activities The Record will publish information on University commencement activities in the April 14 issue. Departments and units are asked to submit any details they wish to publish beyond those found on the Spring Commencement Web site at www.umich.edu/~gradinfo/spring/ including date, time, location and speaker information by 5 p.m. April 9. If we do not receive additional details, we will use the information already posted on the Web. It is suggested that units include a contact phone number for the public to get more information.
