Photo story: Dance group performs April 20–21

In its third Ann Arbor appearance, the Mark Morris Dance Group will give performances at 8 p.m. April 20–21 in the Power Center for the Performing Arts. Sponsored by the University Musical Society (UMS), the two different programs will feature live music by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Ann Arbor Cantata Singers.

Choreographer Mark Morris formed the dance company in 1980 and has created more than 90 works for the group. Known for its innovative style, the company maintains a busy touring schedule. The Mark Morris Dance Group spent three years in residency as the national dance company of Belgium and has completed three film projects. Later this spring, the company will move into a permanent dance center in New York City.

In addition to its performances, the dance group will offer a master class at 7 p.m. April 18 in the Dance Gallery Studio, 111 Third St. For more information and to register, call the Peter Sparling Dance Company, (734) 747-8885. Ben Johnson, UMS director of education and audience development, will interview Mark Morris at noon April 21 in the Michigan League. The dance company also will participate in a post-performance dialogue from the stage April 20.
