Photo story: Engineering students showcase work

Undergraduate engineering students Samir Karamchandani (left) and Shirish Sabnis (right) discuss their design project with Diann Brei, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, at the Mechanical Engineering Design Expo. Karamchandani and Sabnis are among a group of students who focused on completing an ecological redesign of a cellular telephone. Two teams were challenged to design a cellular telephone with environmentally preferable materials and to allow for easy retrieval of its circuit board for reuse and recycling. Team members examined attachment mechanisms, life cycles and failure modes of cellular phones. The teams’ resulting two prototypes were on display at the Expo.

Organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the annual Design Expo showcases the work of senior students in the Design and Manufacturing III course. At the beginning of the term, students select a project from a group of industrial, community service and University projects. They research the problem, create several concepts and engineer a design, often creating a physical or virtual prototype. Photo by D.C. Goings, BMC Media
