Statement on inclement weather

Editor’s Note: The following statement regarding last week’s inclement weather was made Dec. 14 by Provost Nancy Cantor; Robert Kasdin, executive vice president and chief financial officer; and Gilbert S. Omenn, executive vice president for medical affairs.

“We continually focus on the safety of our students, faculty and staff, while at the same time remaining committed to serving our academic and medical communities. Late Monday and Tuesday [Dec. 11–12], severe weather conditions had an impact on the ability of staff to remain at work and/or to report to work at their regularly scheduled times. We appreciate the supervisors who, when the work environment permitted, allowed staff to leave early on Monday during the snowstorm. We also appreciate the faculty and staff who remained at work to provide essential services to students and patients, and others who reported to work after the inclement weather situation began.

“In recognition and appreciation of these efforts, staff will not be charged vacation or PTO for time not worked due to the weather conditions through Tuesday, December 12, until 7:00 p.m. Staff members should report these hours as ‘Inclement Weather Absence’ on their next attendance report.

“We are extremely grateful to staff who reported to work for their regularly scheduled second (afternoon) and third (evening) shifts on Monday and those who reported to work on Tuesday. In recognition, these staff will be given equivalent hours of vacation or PTO time. Staff members should report these hours as ‘Inclement Weather Worked’ on their next attendance report or UHHC timesheet.

“We will be reviewing our related policies and procedures and will keep you informed of any changes.

“Thank you for your concern for, commitment to and support of the University of Michigan.

“Please direct any questions to the appropriate Employee Relations Department: Health System, (734) 647-2385, or Central Campus, (734) 763-2387.”
