The West African batik was given to the AAUW of Michigan in 1998 by Bernadette Kakooza, an AAUW Educational Foundation International Fellow from Uganda. Kakooza was grateful for the assistance the Michigan AAUW gave her as she completed a masters degree at Detroit Mercy College.
The batik scene, painted on cotton and then waxed by hand, depicts women performing their daily activities in a rural community.
