Nix named director of Marching Band

The School of Music has appointed Jamie Nix director of the Marching Band. Nix will work under the direction of Michael Haithcock, incoming director of bands.

Nix worked with the Marching Band as a graduate assistant 1996–99, and he was the hockey band director in 1999. Nix also conducted the Campus Band and taught undergraduate conducting classes.

In addition to Nix’s familiarity with the program, he also is an accomplished musician. Nix holds master’s degrees in conducting and trombone performance from the U-M, where he was principal trombone in the Symphony Band, University Symphony Orchestra, Contemporary Directions Ensemble, Brass Choir and Jazz Band. He also performed in master classes with trombone sections of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

An Alabama native, Nix holds a bachelor of music performance degree from Auburn University, where he was honored as Outstanding Performer of the Year and won the Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition.

Nix had been a lecturer in conducting and assistant to the director of bands at the University of Texas-Austin. Nix has served as a clinician in Texas, Michigan, Illinois and Alabama, and he holds professional memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Big 12 Band Directors Association and International Trombone Association.
