Office of the Vice President for Communications

Michael A. Waring, vice president of government relations for the National Association of Broadcasters, has been appointed the executive director of federal relations and director of the University’s Washington, D.C., office.

The Regents approved Waring’s appointment, effective Oct. 22, at their October meeting.

Waring, who earned a B.A. in journalism from the U-M in 1974, brings to the post a background in government service, as well as extensive experience in government relations, noted Cynthia Wilbanks, vice president for government relations. He has been actively involved with the University of Michigan Club in Washington, serving as president in 1991–93, and is treasurer of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors.

Waring will plan, develop and coordinate liaison activities between the U-M and the federal, legislative and executive branches; educational associations; professional societies; and public policy organizations. Waring also will direct the operational activities of the U-M government relations office in Washington.
