K-Grams bring the world to Crisler

Future Michigan Marching Band member Jamesa Rapley, a fourth grade student from Vetal Elementary School in Detroit, tries the tuba during the K-grams Kids-Fair March 22 at Crisler Arena. For the theme, ‘Smilin’ Around the World,’ children from nine area elementary schools spent the day with their U-M buddies, parents and faculty in activities involving geography, different cultures and ethnicities, international foods, languages and customs. Students visited tables representing foreign countries and collected facts to fill pretend passports. K-grams, a mentor and learning program, pairs college and elementary schools students through activities such as monthly letter exchanges, reading programs and weekly classroom projects.
