Regents honor Horning

Regent Laurence Deitch (right) presents Daniel Horning (left) with a Wolverine football helmet as he honors the alumnus for eight years of service on the Board of Regents. Horning leaves the board this month after deciding in the fall not to seek re-election.

Deitch read a resolution Dec. 12 that called Horning "a conscientious and persistent advocate for students, parents and alumni, and a voice for citizens of Michigan, especially those residing in the western part of the state." In more personal remarks, Deitch noted that during his 10 years on the board he has worked with 14 people, but none, he said "more devoted to Michigan than Dan."

Horning is a 1982 graduate of the University and a resident of Grand Haven. He told the board that his last meeting represented his 217th drive to Ann Arbor. Horning said he always keeps his car keys near his U-M diploma. "My commitment was, each time I came down here, to make my diploma more valuable than before," he said.

In addition to his role as regent, he has served as president of the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Grand Rapids, and he is a member of the University "M" Club, the Victors Club and the President's Club.
