Peering into the past

Patricia Whitesell, director and curator of the U-M Detroit Observatory, gives a tour to Gordon Boyd and Irina Larionova, a prospective astronomy student who moved to the United States from Russia two years ago. The observatory, constructed in 1854, is the oldest in the country to retain its original telescopes in their initial mounts.
