Patricia Whitesell, director and curator of the U-M Detroit Observatory,
gives a tour to Gordon Boyd and Irina Larionova, a prospective astronomy
student who moved to the United States from Russia two years ago.
The observatory, constructed in 1854, is the oldest in the country
to retain its original telescopes in their initial mounts. The building
was restored in the 1990s, and now serves the campus as a museum
and a center for 19th century and musem studies. (Photo by Paul
