Napoleon recalls women on a mission

‘It’s a man’s world but it would be nothing without a woman and a girl,’ former Detroit Police Chief Benny Napoleon said repeatedly as keynote of the Women of Color Task Force’s 20th anniversary conference. Napoleon used his talk to evoke images of heroic Black women on a mission, including educator Anna Julia Cooper; Deborah, Ruth and Naomi from the Bible; Rosa Parks, JoAnne Robinson, Ella Baker and Fannie Lou Hamer of the Civil Rights Movement; and inventor/entrepreneur Madame C.J. Walker. (Photo by Martin Vloet, U-M Photo Services)
