Marilyn Horne surprises UMS crowd by bursting into song

Diva Marilyn Horne let the audience hear the reason for her selection as the 2002 University Musical Society (UMS) distinguished artist at the Ford Honors Program May 11. Not scheduled to sing, Horne spent most of the evening listening herself to performances by many famous operatic friends.

Interim President B. Joseph White (left) and Ford Motor Co. Group Vice President for Corporate Affairs Martin B. Zimmerman provided remarks. A choral group (background) made up of several Ann Arbor youth choirs also recognized Horne with song. The program was the last UMS event of the season and the final performance in pre-renovation Hill Auditorium.
