The regents will meet on the following dates between Nov. 2002 and Dec. 2003: Nov. 14, Dec. 12, Jan. 16, Feb. 20, March 20, April 17, May 15 at U-M–Dearborn, June 19, July 17, Sept. 18, Oct. 16 at U-M–Flint, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18.

The following actions were taken by the regents at their November meeting.

Football locker room to expand
The home team locker room at Michigan Stadium will be expanded for the first time in more than 50 years following approval by the regents. To be completed before the first kick-off next fall, the project will provide additional lockers and showers for student-athletes, new training rooms, medical procedures room, a coaches' area, equipment storage, and appropriate mechanical spaces. The expansion, which will increase the locker room from 4,000 to 11,000 square feet, will be built below the concourse, thus requiring no changes to the stadium's exterior appearance.

Rossetti Associates Architects, of Birmingham, Mich., was selected to design the expansion. The project is estimated to cost $3 million, which includes excavation, shoring, structural elements and furnishings, as well as upgrades to the mechanical, plumbing and electrical infrastructure. The athletic department will provide funding.

Undergraduate Science Building to be bid
The regents authorized the Plant Extension department to seek bids and award construction contracts for the Undergraduate Science Building in the Palmer Drive Development. The four-story laboratory and classroom building previously was referred to as the "L" building and as the Science Instruction Center. Construction is scheduled to be complete in Dec. 2005.

Appointments and promotions
Regents approved the following appointments and promotions, with tenure:

• Dr. Marc B. Hershenson, professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases, Medical School, effective Jan. 1, 2003.

• Dr. Ram K. Menon, professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases, Medical School, effective Nov. 15.

• Ana Diez Roux, associate professor of epidemiology, School of Public Health, effective Jan. 1, 2003.

• Kevin E. Early, associate professor of sociology, Dearborn campus, effective Jan. 1, 2003.

Faculty appointments to endowed and titled professorships approved by the regents include:

• Dr. J. Griswold Ruth, Margery Hopkins Ruth Professorship in Internal Medicine, Medical School, effective Nov. 15.

• Dr. Marc B. Hershenson, Frederick G. L. Huetwell Professor of the Cure and Prevention of Cystic Fibrosis, Medical School, effective Jan. 1, 2003­Dec. 31, 2008.

• Dr. Samir M. Hanash, Henry Sewall Professor of Medicine, Medical School, effective Nov. 15.

• Gerard J. Libaridian, Alex Manoogian Visiting Professor of Modern Armenian History, LSA, effective Jan. 1, 2003­April 30, 2007.

• Richard F. Keep, Crosby-Kahn Collegiate Professor of Neurosurgery and Neuroanatomy, Medical School, effective Oct. 1.

Regents approved the following appointments and reappointments:

• Jeffrey Alan Alexander, senior associate dean for academic affairs, School of Public Health, effective Jan. 1, 2003.

• Amy S. Harris, director, Exhibit Museum, LSA, effective Sept. 1.

• Lois Alexander, reappointed chair, Department of Music and Art, Flint campus, effective Aug. 1.

• Keshav S. Varde, reappointed associate dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, Dearborn campus, effective Sept. 1­Aug. 31, 2005.

Three faculty members were given the emeritus title. Those retiring are:

• Theresa Mary Allor, assistant professor of nursing in the School of Nursing, retired May 31. She has worked hard to teach her students about diversity, the regents said. She established a learning site at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit so that students could experience different cultures and understand the relationship between culture and health.

• William R. Anderson, professor of botany and curator of vascular plants in LSA, retired Aug. 31. His research on evolution within the family Malpighiaceae yielded publications on floral morphology, breeding systems, phylogeny and cytology. He has named and described five genera and more than 200 species new to science.

• Larry S. Matthews, professor of orthopaedic surgery in the Medical School, retired Oct. 8. His special area of interest is adult reconstruction and joint replacement. He was a co-founder of the Orthopaedic Research Laboratories in 1981 and served as co-director with Dr. Steven Goldstein. They brought the lab to its current level as one of the premier orthopaedic research laboratories in the United States.
