Allen-Meares president of SSWR

Paula Allen-Meares, dean and the Norma Radin Collegiate Professor of Social Work, has been named president of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR). The SSWR, founded in 1994, serves as a freestanding organization alongside other groups that are committed to supporting social work research.

Kalyvas wins dissertation award

The American Political Science Association (APSA) has presented Andreas Kalyvas, assistant professor in political science, with the Leo Strauss Award for the best dissertation completed and accepted during 2000 or 2001 in the field of political philosophy. The dissertation, “The Politics of the Extraordinary: Max Weber, Carl Schmitt, Hannah Arendt,” was honored during the APSA’s annual meeting in Boston.

Arts of Citizenship awards grants

The U-M Arts of Citizenship Program recently awarded five faculty and four graduate student projects grants for community-based scholarly activities in the arts, the humanities and design. Now in its fourth year, the program is designed to build bridges between the University and the community through partnerships, innovative research and experimental teaching. Applications were submitted from a variety of schools and the winners were selected from an interdisciplinary committee of U-M faculty. The recipients are:

  • C. Olivia Frost, associate dean and professor of information, and Maurita Peterson Holland, associate professor of information.

  • Claude F. Jacobs, associate professor of behavioral sciences, and Timothy F. Richards, director of the Mardigian Library.

  • Laura P. Kohn, assistant professor of psychology, Carol Mowbray, professor of social work, and Deborah Keller-Cohen, professor of linguistics.

  • Barbara Morris, David Sheridan and George Cooper, lecturers in English.

  • Stella Raudenbush, instructor in education.

  • Ruth Nicole Brown, political science graduate student.

  • Michelle Craig, history graduate student.

  • Zareena Grewal, anthropology and history graduate student.

  • Nhi Lieu, American culture graduate student.

Harary honored by academic journal

For his 80th birthday, Frank Harary, professor emeritus of mathematics, was honored with a special issue of the Journal of Mathematical Chemistry. Several international symposiums also were dedicated to his birthday, including the 20th MATH/CHEM/COMP conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia; the conference on Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science in Constanta, Romania; and the conference on Discrete Geometry and Graph Theory at the Ateneo de Manila University.
