Two assaults at Law Quad not related
Two unrelated assaults occurred within one week in the courtyard of the Law Quadrangle. On Aug. 17, a female student was assaulted about 8:30 p.m. while she was sitting on a bench. Her backpack and purse were stolen but were recovered later with some contents missing. Joseph Robinson, a 56-year-old man with no address, was apprehended near the scene of the crime. He is in jail on counts of assault with intent to commit murder and assault with intent to commit armed robbery. Bail was set at $500,000. His preliminary examination began Aug. 28 and was continued until Sept. 18. The student was treated at the University Hospital Emergency Room (U-M ER) and released that evening.

On Aug. 25, a male visitor allegedly punched a male student after a brief argument. The victim was treated at U-M ER and released. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) contacted the suspect, and the investigation continues.

Crime Alert #21 issued
A strong-arm robbery was reported Aug. 9 after three unknown males reportedly surrounded a man near the Shapiro Undergraduate Library around 3 a.m., hit him from behind and took his wallet before fleeing the scene. The victim did not seek medical treatment.

DPS issued a crime alert with the following suspect descriptions: 1) Black male, 18–25 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 160 pounds, wearing short corn rows, a baggy orange shirt and blue jeans; 2) Black male, 18–25 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 165 pounds, and wearing a black skull cap, black hat, black shirt and black pants; and 3) Black male, 18–25 years old, 170 pounds, bald and wearing a white shirt and light-colored pants.

DPS assists with apprehensions
Officers from DPS and three other law enforcement agencies assisted the Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD) Aug. 12 in a six-hour neighborhood search for three suspects believed to have held up the Bank One office at Packard Avenue and East Stadium Boulevard. While Ann Arbor Police officers began chasing the suspects as they fled from the bank, shots were fired at the officers. No one was injured. Shortly thereafter, the suspects abandoned their stolen vehicle and continued fleeing on foot. Various law enforcement officers, including several canine officers, conducted a door-to-door search through the Buhr Park neighborhood. The three suspects were apprehended and are facing charges in federal court.

DPS Officer Brian Daniels, his canine, Jessy, and DPS Capt. Joseph Piersante were among officers recognized for their efforts at the Sept. 3 Ann Arbor City Council meeting. Seven additional DPS officers were on-scene during the search. Other DPS officers assisted the AAPD by responding to calls for service within the city of Ann Arbor.

Suspect arrested from Crime Alert #20
DPS issued a crime alert July 28 for a reported armed robbery in the Church Street parking structure earlier that morning. Two victims reportedly had been robbed by two suspects, one of whom brandished a small handgun. Keith Lucas, 23, of Ypsilanti, was arraigned Sept. 4 on four counts: possession of a fire arm by a felon, possession of a fire arm while committing a felony and two counts of armed robbery. He is being held in the Washtenaw County Jail with no bond. His preliminary examination is scheduled for Sept. 18. DPS continues to investigate the second suspect, described as a Black male, 19–20 years old, 5 feet 9 inches–5 feet 11 inches tall, 160 pounds, wearing a red bandana and red shirt.
