Fee increases allow for better fire, life safety systems

U-M residence halls will continue to upgrade fire and life safety systems (sprinkler systems and enhanced alarms) with funds generated by next year's room and board fees, approved by the Board of Regents at the April 17 meeting. The first building-wide fire suppression system will be installed this summer in South Quadrangle, U-M's only high-rise residence hall.

The basic rate for a double room with a standard 13 meals per week board plan will be $6,704.

The regents approved average rate increases of 5.3 percent for residence halls and 4.3 percent for Family Housing apartments at the meeting. These rate recommendations for the 2003-04 academic year were determined after discussions with residents as well as with University administrative staff.

The basic rate for a double room with a standard 13 meals per week board plan will be $6,704, an increase of $338 from this year's amount. A single room with a board plan will cost $7,988.

New monthly rates for student residents for Family Housing apartments and townhouses, effective July 1, 2003-June 30, 2004, range from $610 for an efficiency unit to $1,046 for a furnished three-bedroom townhouse.

The rates for the coming academic year were established based on funding allocated to capital renewal projects as well as projected increases in general operating expenses, including salary and wages; utility costs; and insurance, specifically worker's compensation. In addition to the life safety upgrades in residence halls, electrical system upgrades are scheduled for apartments in Family Housing's Northwood III complex to improve apartment ventilation and lighting.
