M-1 lot to close, Palmer deck to open

Pre-construction activities for the new Cardiovascular Center will begin this month on the Old Main Hospital site. In order to accommodate demolition activities for the Clinical Faculty Office Building at the construction site, 26 parking spaces at the north end of the M-1 parking lot will be closed Aug. 15. The majority of spaces in M-1 will remain open until the end of October.

There are several parking alternatives for M-1 parkers, including two new areas. On Aug. 18, 400 spaces in the new Palmer Drive parking structure will be open to blue permit holders. Access to the new parking spaces will be available through the Fletcher parking structure. In order to assist the increased afternoon traffic departing the Fletcher/Palmer structures, the Fletcher Street entrance/exit ramp will be a one-way exit from 4-6 p.m. each weekday.

To accommodate pedestrian traffic between the Central and Medical campuses, a new pedestrian bridge will open across Washtenaw Avenue Sept. 15. The second new parking area for Medical Campus employees will be a new North Campus Blue Crunch Lot. Beginning the first week of September, blue permit holders who park in Lot NC8 (corner of Fuller and Beal) 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. may be transported to their medical campus destinations via a free on-site taxi service. They will be returned to their vehicles at mutually pre-arranged times.
For detailed information regarding parking alternatives, consult the Parking and Transportation Services Web site at http://www.parking.umich.edu or call Parking Services at (734) 764-8291.

Catherine Street construction

A new utility tunnel and duct bank will be installed along the north side of Catherine Street beginning the week of Aug. 11. Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times along Catherine, shifted to the southern lanes. The north sidewalk will be closed during the five-month project and pedestrians are encouraged to travel to and from the parking structure via the elevated walkway over Glen Avenue. The Catherine entrance to the Glen parking structure will remain open; drivers entering the structure are encouraged to use the entrance on Glen to avoid construction along Catherine. As the project progresses east along Catherine, construction activity will be performed underground to keep open the intersection of Catherine and Glen.
