Honoring MLKTwo U-M faculty members are working on an effort to bring a memorial honoring Martin Luther King Jr. to Washington, D.C., along the Tidal Basin between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials.
James Chaffers, a professor of architecture and professor in the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies (CAAS), was a conceptual advisor and design juror with the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation. He continues as a senior planner for project implementation. Jon Lockard, a lecturer at CAAS and a professor of art and humanities at Washtenaw Community College, was an artistic advisor and design juror. These designs show an artist's rendering of the winning submission for the memorial, which includes water running down a long wall over King's quotes. King's image will emerge from a tall stone facing the Jefferson Memorial. The memorial project foundation is raising money for the monument; see http://www.mlkmemorial.org/ for more information. Chaffers notes that the site of the memorialnot far from where King gave his famous "I have a dream" speechis a prominent location that reflects King's continuing importance.
"Getting this piece of land is a major accomplishment," he
says. "It's an encouraging sign for the country."
