Rosina Bierbaum, dean of the School of Natural Resources and Environment, has been named to a four-year term on the board of directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Her term begins Feb. 19. Jenifer Martin has been appointed administrator of the U-M Bioterrorism Preparedness Initiative in the School of Public Health.
School of Education Prof. Michael Nettles has been appointed co-chair of the National Commission on the Twelfth Grade. The commission will meet for the next 18 months to examine student performance, motivation and effort during the senior year of high school as it pertains to achievement and performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
Mark Wilson has been appointed director of the Global Health Program in the School of Public Health.
Awards
Virginia Richardson, professor of education and chair of the educational studies program, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association for Teacher Education during its Jan. 27 annual meeting. Richardson is a former assistant director of the National Institute of Education and was selected by the American Educational Research Association to serve as editor for the latest edition of the "Handbook of Research on Teaching."
Grants Carla O'Connor, assistant professor of education, received an award of $323,404 from the William T. Grant Foundation for her project "Black Identity, School Performance and the Transition in Adulthood: A Longitudinal Analysis."
School of Education Prof. Valerie Lee, with research scientist David Burkam, received a $34,770 award from The Spencer Foundation for the project "Optimal Educational Contexts for Low-Income Young Children: Interim Support."
Lesley Rex, assistant professor of education, received a $34,500 award from the Spencer Foundation in support of the study, "Who is the 'We'?: A Study of Racialized Discourse and Identity Politics in Classroom Literacy Teaching and Learning."
School of Education Dean Karen Wixson and Profs. John Burkhardt
and Stephen Raudenbush have received a grant of $28,083 from the
Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan/W.K. Kellogg Foundation
for the project "Michigan Colloquium and Social Justice in Education."
