Aging and geriatrics research funds

The Geriatrics Center and Institute of Gerontology announce the availability of funds to support pilot/feasibility research in the biology of aging and geriatrics. Proposals may involve biomedical science, health services research, clinical physiology and pathophysiology, behavioral and social science research, or investigations into the basic biology of aging. Support is available for two kinds of applicants: faculty members at the rank of assistant professor or below; and faculty members at any rank who propose collaboration between two laboratories, one of which has not previously carried out research in aging. Individual awards are for one year and will not exceed $35,000. Applications must be submitted by Feb. 10.

U-M-Flint play makes finalist list

The U-M-Flint production of "Master Harold and the Boys" has been named a finalist to perform at the Kennedy Center in April. The play was invited in January to perform at the regional Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival in Evansville, Ind. Finalists will be invited in March to perform at the Kennedy Center. The play is a semi-autographical work by South African playwright Athol Fugard. It is a coming-of-age story set against the background of Apartheid.

Royal Residency lectures moved to MLB

Prof. Ralph Williams' lectures on "The Plays of the Royal Residency" will be held 7-8:30 p.m. every Monday through April 14 in Auditorium 3 of the Modern Languages Building (MLB). The lectures originally were scheduled for East Hall.

Williams invites the public to join his classes, during which he will discuss the works to be performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company. No registration is required.

Humanities returns to Rackham

The Institute for the Humanities moved back to the Rackham Building Jan. 27. The new address is: Institute for the Humanities, 540 Rackham, 915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1070. The phone number remains (734) 936-3518, but the fax number has changed to (734) 763-5507.

Literacy initiative receives funds

U-M-Flint has been awarded funding for its countywide "All Ready to Read: Early Literacy Initiative." The initiative offers a multi-faceted approach to re-educating parents, primary caregivers, paraprofessionals and professionals who work with families throughout Genessee County on methods and strategies for supporting their infants' and children's literacy progress. The program offers an approach to meeting the literacy needs of families through media that are understandable and appealing across the full range of socioeconomic and education levels represented in the community.
