Bill Martin, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, has become acting president of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). Martin, named USOC vice president-secretariat in November, became acting president by USOC constitutional rule when Marty Mankamyer resigned her post Feb. 4. Martin, a member of the board of directors since 1995, will serve until the board elects a new president.




 

 

Karen Wolff, dean of the School of Music, has been nominated by President George W. Bush to serve on the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts. Once confirmed by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Wolff will serve a six-year term.

 

 
Awards

George Shirley, director of the vocal arts division of the School of Music and the Joseph Edgar Maddy Distinguished University Professor of Music, recently was honored with The Legacy Award at the 48th Annual Convention of the National Opera Association. The award was established to honor African Americans who have achieved careers of significance in operatic performance.

Grants

Stella Raudenbush, a research investigator in the School of Education and director of the Lives of Urban Children and Youth Initiative (LUCY), received a $6,271 award from the University of North Carolina/Corporation for National Service for her project, "Literacy Action Network."
