Dan Fisher, professor of geological sciences and of ecology and
evolutionary biology, supervises students making a cast of a mastodon
skull. Fisher and a team of students and community volunteers are
molding an entire mastodon skeleton on loan from the Paleontological
Research Institution in Ithaca, N.Y. Also pictured, clockwise from
