Jim Kennedy of the University Library operates a lift truck during a book drive for the African country of Eritrea. More than 60 cartons of books were collected through the library at various sites. Other supplies also were gathered during the Dec. 20 event, including school textbooks, education equipment, computers and clothing. Enough materials were collected to ship a 40-foot sea container to Eritrea.
The effort was coordinated by U-M Master's in Social Work student Erin Peterson of the Mid-Michigan Friends of Eritrea (MMFE), who was referred by Hatcher Graduate Library African Studies Specialist Afeworki Paulos, an Eritrean native. The Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor, along with other organizations and individuals, also contributed goods. MMFE plans another shipment for April 2003 to send water pumps and pipes, school supplies, clothing and other goods. The group also is working to send a container of medical equipment and medicine later this year. (Photo by Amy Garber, University Library) More stories
