'Genius among storytellers'

Called a "genius among storytellers" by Time magazine, Jay O'Callahan has performed around the globe. "The storyteller of old got on a horse. I get on a plane, parachute into a community, and I'm part of its life a while before moving on to the next one," he says.

He will perform at 5 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Media Union Video Studio, 2281 Bonisteel Blvd., in a School of Art & Design event supported by the Penny W. Stamps Distinguished Visitors Fund. Admission is free.

O'Callahan has won numerous awards from the National Education Film Festival, the Fund for U.S. Artists at International Festivals, Parents' Choice, New England Theater Conference and UNESCO, among others. He also is a regular contributor to National Public Radio.

At the Jan. 16 event, he will perform "Pouring the Sun," the story of Ludvika Moskal Waldony, who came to this country in 1907 when she was 18. She came without friends, family or education. Ludvika was a strong, imaginative woman who created a life for herself in the steel town of Bethlehem, Penn. The story explores the struggles of a working class family in a steel city that has no union.
