AccoladesMartha Jones, assistant professor of history and Afroamerican and African studies, has been named one of 25 recipients of a Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Fellowship for 2003-04. During her month-long trip to New York, Jones will research her project, "'All Bound Up Together': The 'Woman Question' in African-American Public Culture.
The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers recently honored two professors from the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Chair and Professor Michael Bernitsas received the 2003 Blakely Smith Medal for outstanding accomplishment in ocean engineering. Professor Michael Parsons received the 2003 Webb Medal, which salutes outstanding contributions to education in naval architecture and marine or ocean engineering.
The Midwest Eye-Banks and Transplantation Center board of directors June 7 awarded $14,000 grants to three Department of Ophthalmology faculty members for their research projects: Dr. Maya Eibschitz-Tsimhoni, house officer, "A Novel Therapeutic Approach for Graves' Eye Disease;" Dr. Andrei Kindzelski, research investigator, "Intracellular Ca2+ Signaling During RPE-Leukocyte Binding Effect of Anti-inflammatory Agents;" Dr. David Zacks, assistant professor, "Intra-vitreal Injection of Triamcinolone Acetonide in Rabbits with Experimentally Induced Staphylococcus Epidermidis Endophthalmitis."
Robert Lewis, professor of English and editor-in-chief of the Middle English Dictionary, has been awarded the Sir Israel Gollancz Memorial Prize by the British Academy for his work in
bringing the dictionary to completion in 2001. Lewis is only the third American to receive the biennial award for English studies since its inception in 1925. Lewis also was named a fellow of the Dictionary Society of North America in May.
