President Mary Sue Coleman presented U.S. Rep. Nick Smith with
an award from the Science Coalition for his strong advocacy of university-based
basic science research. Smith was given a Champion of Science award
and a personalized Wheaties box at a June 2 luncheon. Smith, who
is chairman of the Subcommittee on Research of the House Science
Committee, led an effort last fall to double National Science Foundation
funding for research and science education over the next five years.
The Champion of Science award honors members of Congress who have
demonstrated strong support for federal funding of research. The
Science Coalition is an alliance of 60 universities dedicated to
sustaining the federal commitment to U.S. leadership in basic science.
U-M is a founding member of the Science Coalition. |
