John Bacon of Ann Arbor runs the steps of Michigan Stadium while
workers from FieldTurf install the facility's new playing surface.
The Athletic Department made the decision to return to an artificial
surface for the first time since 1990 because of poor field conditions
in recent years. FieldTurf began installation of the new playing
surface shortly after Commencement ceremonies, and the company expects
to finish work by July 4. U-M practices on the surface, which resembles
real grass, in its indoor practice facility—Oosterbaan Fieldhouse—and
played on a similar field during the 2001 season at the University
of Washington. Bacon, a U-M alumnus, is a freelance writer and ice
hockey coach at Ann Arbor's Huron High School. He has a historical
connection to U-M athletics as author of "Blue Ice: The Story
of Michigan Hockey." (Photo by Martin Vloet, U-M Photo Services)
