The Women's Educational Center (WEC) at U-M-Flint is collaborating with the Art Department to feature the work of women art students and to promote their visibility on campus. For the second year in a row, undergraduate students in the graphic design class of instructor Janet Lorch have accepted the challenge of creating a poster for Women's History Month. "This is a difficult assignment," says WEC Director Mary Ann O'Connor. "The students have to think about how to visually convey the multiple histories of women, and our current situations." The poster selected was designed by Brandi Neil. "The Selection Committee was unanimous in its choice this year," O'Connor says. "Her image is very strong, acknowledging women's diversity, and still there is a shared vision of peace, represented by the white dove in the center. What better message could we possibly convey now?" Other collaboration between the WEC and the Art Department has included the design of a WEC logo, creation of a children's mural at the WEC, and the display of women art students' paintings and prints at the WEC. "Our office has become a gallery," O'Connor says. "Next we want to develop research paradigms that make the connection between women's art and scholarship." More stories
