LSVSP grant program

The Life Sciences, Values and Society Program (LSVSP) and Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) invite applications for the LSVSP Annual Seed Grant Program. Four awards of $5,000-$20,000 are available to fund faculty activities that explore ethical, legal or social implications of developments in the life sciences, including genomics, bioengineering and evidence-based medicine. Applications are due March 15.

Cancer Center volunteers

The Cancer Center's Patient Education Resource Center needs volunteers to help patients and families obtain information about cancer. Volunteers should have strong English communication skills, basic computer literacy and knowledge of the Internet. Retired professionals who want to use their experience and skills to empower patients and caregivers to make informed decisions about their health care are well suited for this opportunity. Volunteers are asked to complete one four-hour shift per week during business hours.

UMHS sites honored

Six U-M Health System (UMHS) sitesBrighton Health Center, Briarwood Medical Group, Briarwood Family Practice, Chelsea Family Practice, Canton Health Center and Turner Geriatrics Centerwere honored with the prestigious 2002 Governor's Award of Excellence for Improving Preventive Care in the Ambulatory Care Setting. The award was presented to each of the UMHS sites by the Michigan Peer Review Organization and former Michigan Gov. John Engler. The award honors the UMHS sites' commitment to making continuous improvements to preventive services in the areas of diabetes care, yearly mammograms, and adult immunizations for influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia.

Charles Ross Fellowship

The Department of Pharmacology is accepting applications for the Charles Ross Summer Research Fellowship for Minority Undergraduate Students. Applicants must be full-time students, must have completed at least two terms and maintained a 3.0 or better GPA, be a member of an underrepresented minority group, and must be willing to devote three full months to laboratory research. Support includes a $3,500 stipend, supervision by a faculty member, laboratory supplies, and participation in laboratory discussions and departmental seminars.

CoE staff awards

The College of Engineering (CoE) seeks nominations for its Excellence in Staff Service Award Program. All full- and part-time regular, non-faculty employees in the college, regardless of length of service, are eligible. Nominations will be accepted for individual staff members or staff work groups (two or more), as well as teams that have taken on time-limited tasks.
