News briefsUROP Spring Symposium The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) will host its 2003 Spring Research Symposium April 4, marking the program's 15th anniversary. The symposium will begin with a faculty recognition ceremony and reception from noon -1:30 p.m. at the Alumni Center, during which Provost Paul N. Courant will speak. The afternoon sessions at the Michigan League, titled "Reflecting on 15 Years of Discovery," will include poster sessions and oral presentations by students on research projects they have participated in with faculty members. UROP began in 1989 with 14 student/faculty partnerships and the program continues to grow, offering first- and second-year students the opportunity to be part of the research community. Today, approximately 900 students and more than 600 faculty researchers are engaged in research partnerships.
Neubacher Award nominations Each October during Investing in Abilities Week, the James Neubacher Award is presented to a faculty or staff member, student, or alumna/alumnus for significant achievements in promoting acceptance and awareness of people with disabilities; advocating for the civil rights of people with disabilities; or removing barriers to full participation in programs and services by people with disabilities. Established by U-M's Council for Disability Concerns in 1990, the award is a memorial to Neubacher, a U-M alumnus. The award includes a stipend from the Office of the President. U-M-Dearborn, U-M-Flint commencement Timothy O'Brien, vice president of corporate relations for Ford Motor Company, and Shirley Stancato, president and CEO of New Detroit, will be the main speakers at U-M-Dearborn's 2003 winter commencement ceremonies April 27. O'Brien will speak at a morning ceremony for graduates of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the School of Management, and Stancato will speak at an afternoon ceremony for graduates of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, and the School of Education. Billy Taylor, one of the most accomplished jazz pianists in the world, will be the keynote speaker for U-M-Flint's 2003 spring commencement ceremonies May 4. Taylor will receive an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Michigan at the ceremony. Taylor is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame and has received many awards, including an Emmy.
Work/Life resources for parents-to-be The Work/Life Resource Center (WLRC) announces the Expectant Parents Resource Program. The program offers a collection of useful information on adoption and foster care, birthing and parenting classes, childcare and development, parenting and family life, breast-feeding, returning to work, community resources and flexible work schedules. Additionally, faculty and staff can find information on U-M programs and policies, as well as a series of Web links and a listing of books available in the WLRC library.
