Deliveryman arrested
A floral deliveryman waived his preliminary exam May 6 in connection with
a charge of criminal sexual conduct–fourth degree. Arthur Wesselman,
50, of Ypsilanti, has been charged with inappropriate touching of a staff
person at the University Hospital April 25. Wesselman's pre-trial is scheduled
for July 1.
Small fire extinguished at University Hospital
An alert staff member extinguished a small fire in a patient's
bed at the University Hospital April 17. The patient sustained minor injuries.
Property damage was confined to the bedding and mattress.
Thief thwarted in act
A staff person at 300 North Ingalls reported to the Department
of Public Safety (DPS) April 3 that she found an unknown man searching
through her book bag in her office. When she called for help, the man
pushed her out of the way and fled. Police officers were successful in
locating and arresting a man in the area who matched the description provided
by the victim. Percy Carter, 48, of Ypsilanti, pleaded no contest April
30 to a 10-year felony of attempted larceny and misdemeanor non-aggravated
assault. He is scheduled for sentencing June 3.
Burglars target variety of items
Four burglaries on campus in April resulted in the theft of a variety
of items.
An Mcard and key were reported stolen April 6 from a room in South Quadrangle.
On April 7, staff in the Modern Languages Building reported an equipment cabinet lock had been damaged and a digital video recorder was
missing. The same day, a resident of Northwood IV reported the theft of electronic equipment and accessories. Evidence indicated the thief had entered
the apartment through an unsecured sliding glass door.
Staff at the Michigan Union reported April 23 the theft of an "M" flag from the rooftop flagpole. The flag was valued at $400.
Vehicle thefts continue
A 2000 Ford Mustang was reported stolen from Lot NC44 April 8.
It was recovered three days later in Detroit and the air bag was missing.
On April 20, a hospital patient reported to DPS that an acquaintance had taken his or her car without permission. The vehicle later was returned
and no charges will be filed.
DPS officers recovered a vehicle in the 400 block of East Jefferson Street
April 22 that earlier had been reported stolen from Warren. No vehicle
damage was apparent.
