• Fewer than half of uninsured people get
the medical care they need for serious medical problems
• More than 80 percent of uninsured children
and adults live in working families, where at least one person has
a job
• 19 percent of uninsured adults diagnosed
with heart problems and 13 percent with hypertension do not have
medical management of their diseases
• Uninsured women with breast cancer have
a 30 to 50 percent higher risk of dying than women with private
insurance
• 25 percent of persons with diabetes go without
a checkup for two years if they have been without health insurance
for a year or more
• The uninsured are 37 percent more likely
to die following a car crash than those who are insured
• The uninsured in Michigan make up 13.5 percent
of the population. Texas has the highest population of uninsured
with 26.5 percent, and Minnesota has the lowest with 9.8 percent
• Illness in children, such as ear infections,
can affect language development and long-term performance in school,
and can create problems later in life
