Lecture, candlelight vigil to mark second anniversary of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks

Students once again will organize a candlelight vigil, similar to this one held last year, in honor of those who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. A lecture also is planned to remember those who lost their lives two years ago.

At 4 p.m. Sept. 8, Robin Wright, global affairs correspondent for The Los Angeles Times, will deliver the 2003 Josh Rosenthal Education Fund Lecture entitled "The Middle East Challenge: Coming to Grips with Islam, Democracy, and Terrorism." The event is in the Pendleton Room of the Michigan Union. Wright, a 1970 U-M graduate and five-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, has reported from more than 130 countries around the world and appears regularly on "Meet the Press."

The fund—which is housed at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy—was created in memory of Josh Rosenthal, a 1979 U-M graduate who died at the World Trade Center. The fund supports lectures, seminars, research and student internships that encourage new understandings of global issues.

At 8 p.m. Sept. 11, students and community members will gather for a candlelight vigil on the Diag, with music and remarks.

Both events are free and open to the public.
