U-M receives planning award

U-M is the recipient of the Merit Award as part of the 2003 Society for College and University Planning/American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education awards program. Professor James Duderstadt, former U-M president, accepted the award for the University July 22 in Miami. The Merit Award recognizes U-M for its 1963 "Central Campus Planning Study" and 1987 update. The competition recognizes state-of-the-art planning and emphasizes excellence in higher education environments and settings and its resultant physical manifestations.

Changes in Sexual Harassment Policy Office
Kathleen Donohoe, director the Sexual Harassment Policy Office (SPHO), left the University Aug. 22 to become special assistant to the commandant of the United States Coast Guard. Donohoe, who came to U-M after retiring from a 20-year career in the Coast Guard, will work for two years in Washington, D.C., on homeland security issues. Jayne Thorson, assistant dean of the medical school, and Sue Rasmussen have been named interim co-directors of the office.

Pound House seeks used toner cartridges
The Pound House Children's Center (PHCC) is accepting used toner cartridges from University offices for its recycling program. Proceeds will be used by PHCC to provide assistance to lower-income children, and provide quality of care for all children. To arrange for a pickup, call (734) 998-8440.

HRAA cleans up during Green Clean Day
On Aug. 7, Human Resources and Affirmative Action (HRAA) staff members in Wolverine Tower and the Administrative Services Building held their second annual Green Clean Day. By cleaning offices and recycling, HRAA staff collected more than 1,200 pounds of shredded paper, 5,500 pounds of recycled paper, and 500 pounds of reusable office supplies and other materials.

U-M real estate forum scholarships
The U-M/Urban Land Institute (ULI) Real Estate Forum is offering five $2,000 scholarships to graduate students. The 17th annual U-M/ULI Real Estate Forum is Nov. 5-6. The forum, "Main Street Mania: Woodward Avenue and Beyond," will focus on downtown development throughout Oakland County. Graduate students studying business, architecture, urban planning, law, natural resources or engineering, who wish to be considered for one of the scholarships, must submit a resume along with a brief paper addressing what role the public sector has in fostering affordable housing, and an example of where it has worked. Papers must be double-spaced and limited to one page in length using 12-point font. All submissions must be e-mailed to ptallen@umich.edu and jkosteva@umich.edu by p.m. Oct. 22. The forum is co-sponsored by the Business School, College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and the Urban Land Institute.
