News BriefsCREES offers travel awards The Center for Russian and East European Studies (CREES) invites applications from faculty for the Ronald and Eileen Weiser Professional Development Award Program. The program supports short-term (2-3 week) travel awards to the Slovak Republic. Applicants are invited to propose projects in any field of research or teaching with a faculty partner at a Slovak institution of higher education. Awards will consist of round-trip airfare, housing and a modest per diem. Selection of awardees will be made through a review of proposals at CREES; up to four awards will be granted in 2005. Applications must be submitted by Oct. 15 for travel to Slovakia between January-May 2005, or September-December 2005. Group with U-M ties wins bridge national championship Grigoriy Blekherman and Han Peters, graduate student instructors in mathematics, and Amy Kiefer, a doctoral student in social psychology, were part of a team that won the Grand National Teams event at the Summer 2004 North American Bridge Championships in New York City. Another member of the foursome had U-M connections: David Harty is the husband of Christianne Myers, a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Theatre and Drama. The event, sponsored by the American Contract Bridge League, drew 7,000 players from 50 states and 40 foreign countries to compete in events at all levelsfrom newcomers to life masters to world-class experts. U-M-Dearborn to offer master's in public policy U-M-Dearborn will launch a new master's degree program in public policy studies this fall. The degree is an interdisciplinary program designed for adult, part-time, college-educated students working in policy-related positions, and for students who wish to prepare for careers in public service and public affairs, says Professor Donald Anderson, chair of the Department of Social Studies. The program will be the only evening master of public policy program offered in southeastern Michigan. Class takes focus off fad diets to curb obesity epidemic To take the focus off food and address the root of problems with over-eating, the U-M Health System's (UMHS) Preventive Cardiology Services is offering education for lifelong weight management in the form of a 12-week workshop. The Hunger Within Workshop will guide participants though an intensive program unlocking the psychological barriers to permanent weight loss. It will explore the core reasons for overeating, identify the triggers that precipitate a binge, and help break the cycle of emotional eating. U-M scientist involved in mission to Mercury Thomas Zurbuchen, associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences, has been a sensor lead scientist on the Fast Imaging Plasma Spectrometer (FIPS)one of the scientific instruments carried on MESSENGER, which launched Aug. 3. FIPS will observe low-energy ions coming from Mercury's surface and sparse atmosphere, ionized atoms picked up by the solar wind, and other solar wind components. MESSENGER should enter orbit around Mercury in March 2011. Special Collections Library honored The Special Collections Library received a Meritorious Achievement Award from the Lincoln Highway Association (LHA) at its annual meeting in June. The award recognizes the library's role in the preservation of the archives of the original LHA for the last 70 years. The original LHA was founded for the purpose of planning and promoting the first coast-to-coast highway in the United States, and had its headquarters in Detroit. English classes offered The Family Housing Language Program offers English classes for families of international students, faculty and staff. Registration for the fall semester is taking place for children, teens and adults. Native speakers of English are needed as volunteers.
