Parkers will need AVI device
Hill Street parking structure to automate Jan. 19

The roll-out of automatic vehicle identification (AVI) technology at U-M parking structures will continue in January with activation in the Hill Street parking structure (S8) Jan. 19. Permit holders entering the structure during enforcement hours of 6 a.m.-5 p.m. will need an AVI device or swipe card to activate the gate arm.

"Our first major installation at the North Entrance near the Cancer and Geriatric Center went very smoothly last month," says Dave Miller, interim director for Parking and Transportation Services (P&TS). "In fact, we sold twice the number of devices at our satellite sales before the conversion date than we had expected. So we are adjusting our staffing for the satellite sales periods to accommodate our customers."

For the Hill implementation, P&TS staff will exchange permits for devices in room E0530 of the Electronic Education and Resources Building of the Business School 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 15, 16 and 19.

Swipe cards for business vehicle permits should be available in mid-January. They are delayed because the first batch U-M received were defective.

One of the benefits of the AVI system is that it counts the vehicles entering the structure and displays a "full" sign when the structure has reached capacity.

"The gate arms will continue to activate when the structure is full," Miller says, "so cars may pull into the structure and circle back through the exit, rather than creating a line-up of cars on the street."

Additional information about the AVI system and implementation can be found at http://www.parking.umich.edu.
