Special notice regarding University of Michigan MCard CashChip

On May 31, 2001, U-M ended issuance of MCards with CashChips. A balance remains on some of the outstanding cards. Effective June 30, 2004, the University will deem any balance remaining on any card as unclaimed property.

Under Michigan law, MCL 567.221, unclaimed property must be turned over to the treasurer for the State of Michigan. The University will remit all balances to the state treasurer on or around Sept. 1, 2004. Thereafter, persons wishing to redeem the balance on their MCard CashChip must obtain the money from the state treasurer. The University will provide the cardholder with certification of the balance available on the card for purposes of presenting to the state treasurer evidence of the amount owed.

Prior to Sept. 1, 2004, to redeem the balance on the MCard CashChip, bring the card to: MCard Center, 1000 Student Activities Building, 515 E. Jefferson St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1316.

On and after Sept. 1, 2004, to obtain certification of the balance amount on the card for presentation to the state treasurer to obtain the balance, bring the card in person to: Treasurer's Office/MCard Administration, 10090 Wolverine Tower, 3003 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1283.

For questions about the MCard CashChip program or any aspect of this notice, contact Judy Hufziger at (734) 936-2626.
