'Views and Voices' exhibit shines with silver medal

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has awarded a silver medal to the University for the multimedia exhibit, "Views and Voices: U-M's Case for Diversity."

The exhibit, which documents the University's defense of its admissions policies before the U.S. Supreme Court, includes photographs by Marcia Ledford of U-M Photo Services, audio recordings from the court proceedings and transcripts of the decisions. It was created by Marketing Communications (MC) and was displayed at the Media Union (now Duderstadt Center) in early 2004.

"This CASE award is especially gratifying because so many people in the University worked hard to make it happen," says Brett Ashley, MC director. "There was a tremendous amount of information that had to be gathered and put into context, and that couldn't have happened in a short amount of time without a group effort."

Ashley credited Kathy Krick, MC graphic design supervisor, for the design, and Linda Kendall from the Duderstadt Center for helping mount the exhibit. The award was given in the Individual Special Public Relations and Community Relations Projects category.

"Covering these cases has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I could not fathom an assignment that would constitute a better blending of law, civil rights and photographic storytelling," Ledford says. "I'll be forever grateful to all who believed that this historic event must be documented, especially [Vice President and General Counsel] Marvin Krislov and [Vice President for Communications] Lisa Rudgers."

The exhibit was sponsored by the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, Law School, Office of the Vice President for Communications, Office of the Vice President and General Counsel, Office of the Provost, Arts of Citizenship Program, Bentley Historical Library, and the Duderstadt Center.
