News BriefsRegents to meet July 15 The Board of Regents will hold its monthly meeting July 15 in the Regents Room of the Fleming Administration Building. Senate bills tackle copyright, university research The U.S. Senate approved two bills June 25 that deal with the prosecution and punishment of people who violate copyright law by swapping songs or movies online, or who make video recordings of films in theaters. The two copyright bills are intended to curb the trading of music online, which is popular among college students. The Senate also passed a bill that would eliminate a barrier to collaborative research between universities and companies. The legislation, formally called the Cooperative Research and Technology Enhancement Act of 2004, or the Create Act, S 2192, would amend federal law to expressly allow the government to approve patent applications on inventions that have been made collaboratively among multiple organizations. U-M, AAPS breaks will differ in 2005 Since the 1999-2000 academic year, the Ann Arbor Public Schools' (AAPS) mid-winter break has coincided with the University's spring break. But AAPS has scheduled its 2005 mid-winter break a week earlier than the University's spring break. AAPS will close at the end of the day Feb. 18 and resume classes Feb. 28. The University's academic calendar for 2004-05, approved by the regents in May 2002, lists spring break Feb. 26-March 7. School of Dentistry sponsors mouth guard clinic Amateur athletes, ages 5 and older, can be fitted for a free, customized mouth guard 9 a.m.-noon July 17 at the School of Dentistry. Dental and dental hygiene students will make the mouth guards at the dental school, 1011 N. University Ave. No appointment is necessary; however, mouth guards will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Because of the program's popularity, there could be a wait of 30 minutes for a chair. The mouth guard program is in its 17th year and is funded by a grant from the late Dr. Samuel D. Michigan Television wins three Emmys Michigan Television, the public television station of the University, won the Emmy Award in each of the three categories in which it was nominated. The awards were given by the National Television Academy at the 26th annual Michigan Chapter Emmy Awards June 5. Emmys were awarded for Outstanding Entertainment Program or Series: "Ann Arbor Celebrates St. Petersburg"; Segment Editing: "The Master and the Muse"; and Segment Writing: "Heroes." The awards were three of the nine Emmys presented to public television stations in the state. More Stories
