'I went to a garden party'

The Matthaei Botanical Gardens, 1800 N. Dixboro Road, will host its first annual garden party 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 31.

The event is open to the community, and there will be no charge for admission or activities, only for food and ice cream.

Trail tours will be offered throughout the day, and docents will be available to answer questions in the conservatory. To remember the day, Mike Palmer, senior horticulturist, will offer Peek-a-Boo and Magical Michael basil plants to transplant and take home.

Hot air balloon rides will be offered 10 a.m.-noon, weather permitting. The Saline Fiddlers will perform at noon.

For children, clowns Darby and Lovely will make animal sculptures and entertain. Jean Gordon, docent and storyteller, will have a tale for young and old.

For more information, call (734) 998-7061.
