Interim dean of students named

Susan Eklund has agreed to serve as interim dean of students, Vice President for Student Affairs E. Royster Harper announced July 29. Eklund’s appointment will be effective Aug. 9, pending approval by the Board of Regents.

Before retiring in April, Eklund served for five years as the director of user services for Michigan Administrative Information Services and M-Pathways. Her responsibilities included direction and management of departments, communications and public affairs, Help Desk support, and change management, transition programs and consultation for central offices and units.

A graduate of the U-M with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a juris doctor degree, she served as the Law School assistant dean for student affairs for eight years and associate dean for 15 years.

During that time, she was responsible for overseeing admissions, financial aid, curriculum planning, registration, academic advising, student standards, discipline and professional responsibility certification, career planning and placement, services for students with disabilities, and student programs. She also was involved with student activities, organizations, international programs and technological services.

“With nearly 30 years of solid student affairs and leadership experience, Ms. Eklund is a seasoned professional who can assist the Office of the Dean of Students in maintaining its mission: to ensure that students accomplish their educational and personal goals within the context of the broader academic purpose of the University.” Harper says.

“Her proficiencies and insight will play an important role in planning, guiding, management and accountability for the dean of students’ area during this intervening period. We are truly appreciative of the fact that she has come out of retirement briefly to assist us at this time while we launch a comprehensive national search for a permanent dean of students.”

The search for a permanent dean will be led by Barbara MacAdam, head of reference for the U-M Library and former head of the Undergraduate Library. MacAdam also has served as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Information and LSA, and as chair of the Student Relations Advisory Council. Other members of the committee, representing faculty, staff and students, will be named in the fall, Harper says.

The committee will begin its work in the fall. Questions or comments on the search should be directed to or by calling (734) 764-5132.
