Provost Paul N. Courant meets with students at the second annual Advanced Placement Rising Scholar Recognition Program Oct. 31. The event at the Michigan League honored students who scored high on a number of AP exams. Shown here are two of the more than 40 students who attended the program: Trevor McDougal, a St. Joseph High School graduate who now is a freshman at Brigham Young University, and Lauren Snyder, a senior at Jenison High School in Jenison, Mich., which is near Grand Rapids. McDougal is one of two people named an AP State Scholar for scoring a 3 or higher on the greatest number of exams and for having the highest average grade (at least 3.5) on all AP exams taken. Snyder also scored high on several AP tests; she is considering playing water polo at U-M next year. U-M, the College Board and the General Motors Corp. sponsored the event. William James, chair of the Michigan Advanced Placement Advisory Committee, said the committee chose 139 seniors to honor this year for their outstanding scores on the AP exams.
