United Way impacts area agencies

With the help of University contributors to the Washtenaw United Way last year, the Perry Nursery School was able to offer affordable childcare to 165 children; the Hope Clinic in Ypsilanti saw 702 patients for dental care; and the Center for Independent Living assisted more than 3,000 people with disabilities, says U-M campaign chair Cynthia Wilbanks.

As the University's United Way Fall Charitable Campaign comes to a close, organizers remind employees that their campaign contributions can make a difference in the lives of their neighbors, family and friends.

"It is a convenient and easy way for University staff to support local health and human services agencies," says Wilbanks, U-M vice president for government relations.

With donor contributions, Washtenaw United Way supports 37 local health and human services agencies and three community affiliates. These agencies and affiliates utilize the funds to provide food, clothing and shelter to people in crisis, assist victims of domestic violence, deliver meals to homebound people, assist seniors in finding affordable housing, provide after-school and summer activities, and more.

"A unique aspect of the University's United Way Campaign is that it allows employees the option of designating their dollars to any nonprofit in the United States, not just the 37 local agencies," Wilbanks says. Employees who reside outside of Washtenaw County may designate to their local United Way.

"Other colleagues may choose to contribute to a national organization or to other local agencies of their choice," she says. "All an employee needs to do is write in the name and address of the nonprofit at the bottom of the pledge card."
