Impromptu dance

And step, and kick, and turn, and kick ... Humanities Institute fellows, work-study assistants and staff enjoy an impromptu dance class Nov. 7 led by Stephanie Jordan (left), who chairs the Department of Dance Studies at Roehampton Institute, University of Surrey at London. Jordan recently spent two weeks as a visiting fellow at the institute. She came in connection with the University-wide theme semester and celebration of the tercentenary of St. Petersburg, and took part in the symposium, "From the Mariinsky to Manhattan: George Balanchine and the Transformation of American Dance." Besides having danced professionally, Jordan has transformed the field of dance studies by bringing the history of dance to musicologists around the world. (Photo by John Woodford, News Service)
