Regents to meet Sept. 18
The Board of Regents will hold its monthly meeting Sept. 18 in the Regents
Room of the Fleming Administration Building. Public comments will open
the meeting at 2 p.m. Individuals with disabilities who wish to attend
the meeting and need assistance should contact the Office of the Vice
President and Secretary of the University in advance at (734) 764-3883.
Search for housing director underway
The Division of Student Affairs currently is conducting its search for
the director of University Housing/assistant vice president for Student
Affairs. The position oversees the sixth-largest campus housing system
and third-largest family housing operation in the United States.
The Search Advisory Committee (SAC) is working with A.T. Kearney Inc.,
an executive search firm based in Alexandria, Va. Names of potential candidates

Medical plan for retirees with Medicare
Beginning Jan. 1, retired U-M faculty and staff eligible for Medicare
can select Comprehensive Major Medical (CMM) as part of their benefits
package. While CMM has lower-cost monthly premiums compared to other plans,
participants may have more out-of-pocket expenses depending on medical
care services utilized, including annual deductibles and co-pays. Medicare-eligible
participants should review all options carefully upon receipt of Open
Enrollment books, which will be mailed at the end of September. Additional

Commencement speaker entry deadline
The deadline for prospective student Winter Commencement speakers to
submit speeches for consideration is 5 p.m. Oct. 16. The competition is
open to students receiving bachelor's degrees during Summer Term 2003
or Fall Term 2003. Submissions must consist of a typed draft of the speechfive
minutes or lessand a standard audio cassette or CD of the author
delivering the speech. Students also are asked to submit a curriculum
vitae or resume and include an e-mail address and local phone number.
A committee of students, faculty and staff will select the student. The
commencement ceremony is 2 p.m. Dec. 14 at Crisler Arena. Submit entries

U-M earns two healthy workplace awards
The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports has recognized
U-M-Flint and the U-M Health System's MFit Employee Wellness Program as
Silver Healthy Workplace Winners. Organizations receiving the award have
shown outstanding commitment to the health of their employees by establishing
creative worksite health promotions programs with demonstrated success.
Faculty Research Grants and Fellowship program
The Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies invites applications
for its 2003 Faculty Research Grants and Fellowship program. Faculty members
may apply for a grant and/or a fellowship, which have a primary objective
of assisting junior faculty in establishing and sustaining an active program
of research and scholarship. Consideration also will be given to senior
faculty undertaking a new line of inquiry. The application deadline is

ProCEED program earns da Vinci Award
The Department of Mechanical Engineering's ProCEED (Program for Community
Engagement in Engineering Design) program is the recipient of a da Vinci
Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Michigan Chapter,
and the Engineering Society of Detroit. The awards, which will be presented
Sept. 19 at "Dinner with da Vinci" at Ford Field, recognize design innovations
that exceed legally mandated requirements to further empower all people.
ProCEED, honored in the assistive technology-research category, encourages
students to use their engineering skills to help people with disabilities.
Students work with sponsors to refine proposals, design equipment or systems,
and build prototypes that assist people with disabilities.
