Mary Sue Coleman named to J&J board

President Mary Sue Coleman Sept. 8 was elected to the Board of Directors of Johnson & Johnson (J&J). J&J is the world's most comprehensive and broadly based manufacturer of health care products, as well as a provider of related services, for the consumer, pharmaceutical and medical devices and diagnostics markets.

Athletic Department offers free Go Blue Pass

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is offering the Go Blue Pass to all faculty and staff members again this year. The pass provides complimentary admission to varsity athletic home events in volleyball, women's basketball, women's gymnastics, men's gymnastics, wrestling, softball and baseball.

To obtain a Go Blue Pass, faculty and staff need to show their M-card at the Michigan Ticket Office prior to Nov. 1.

New association formed for Latino faculty and staff

During the summer, a new group joined the University community—the Latino Faculty and Staff Association (LFSA).

LFSA will aid in protecting and promoting the professional interests of Latino faculty and staff, in addition to participating in building a stronger sense of community and participation within the greater University community.

LFSA will hold monthly meetings 3:30-5 p.m. on the third Friday of the month. For more information, e-mail cbenamou@umich.edu or matjiasc@umich.edu.

Social Psychology program honored

The Department of Psychology's Program in Social Psychology received the Suinn Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association (APA). The award is given to university psychology departments that have demonstrated excellence in the recruitment, retention and graduation of ethnic minority students. The award, named after Richard M. Suinn—past president of the APA—was presented in August at the APA's annual meeting in Toronto.

Instructions for Open Enrollment

Faculty and staff soon will receive 2003 Open Enrollment Workbooks. Faculty or staff members who are certain they will keep the same benefits coverage for 2004 and who do not want a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) do not need to complete and return the Personal Enrollment Worksheet. Those who want to make changes or enroll in an FSA need to send in the worksheet. FSAs do not renew automatically every year. FASAP and WRLC offer free presentations

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program and Work/Life Resources Center are offering 13 brown-bag educational presentations during 2003-04. The free, 45-minute presentations are available to any faculty/staff group or unit upon request and are provided at the requestor's site. Among the classes offered this year: Controlling Your Clutter; Creative Thinking; Lifestyle Changes to Increase Energy and Health; Perfectionism: When Getting It Right Goes Wrong; S.O.S.: Stop On-Going Stress; Balancing Work and Personal Life; and Understanding Generations at Work. Distinguished Dissertation Awards nominations

Nominations for the Distinguished Dissertation Awards are due by 5 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Nominees must have been awarded or will be awarded their doctoral degree during the 2003 calendar year. The awards, which include a $1,000 honorarium, recognize exceptional and unusually interesting work produced by doctoral students during the last phase of their graduate work. UMHS wins award for burn-injury video

A video produced by the U-M Health System's Trauma Burn Center that portrays the medical consequences of burn injuries through children's first person narratives has won an international award. The video "In an Instant" is the 2003 FREDDIE award recipient in the category of safety and first aid by The International Health & Medical Media Awards. The center will receive the award Nov. 7 at a black tie ceremony in Los Angeles.

LSVSP awards program seeks applicants

The Life Sciences, Values and Society Program invites applicants for its 2003-04 awards program. Among the awards are Faculty Enrichment Awards, which support lectures or seminars that examine the social impact of advances raised by the life sciences.
