The National Governors Association at its 97th annual meeting July 16 in Des Moines, Iowa, honored Sphinx Organization founder Aaron Dworkin and his work to boost appreciation for classical music and the profession among black and Latino youth. Dworkin, who holds an appointment at the School of Music and bachelor's and master's degrees in violin performance from the University, was among eight recipients of Awards for Distinguished Service to State Government. In 1996, Dworkin founded the Sphinx Organization, which each year presents in-school programs to 20,000 underserved students in 100 urban schools nationwide. The Sphinx Instrument Fund also provides $100,000 in quality instruments to further the career potential of aspiring musicians. To date, the Sphinx Music Assistance Fund has awarded more than $600,000 in prizes and scholarships.
