As the 109th Congress convened in Washington last week, three freshman lawmakers with U-M degrees were among those sworn into office.
In the House, Rep. Joe Schwarz (R-Battle Creek) replaces former Rep. Nick Smith and is Michigan's newest congressman. Schwarz, a surgeon and former state senator, received his undergraduate degree at the University and currently serves as president-elect of the U-M Alumni Association.
Another new House member is Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga., 6th District). Also a doctor-turned-lawmaker, Price received both his undergraduate and medical degrees at Michigan.
A new face in the Senate is Ken Salazar (D-Colo.). A U-M law graduate, Salazar is a former attorney general in his home state.
Thirteen alumni in all are serving in the new Congress. The others are Reps. Harold Ford Jr. (D-Tenn.), Paul Gillmor (R-Ohio), Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.), Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), Mark Kennedy (R-Minn.), Dale Kildee (D-Mich.), Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-Mich.), Steve LaTourette (R-Ohio), Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Fred Upton (R-Mich.).
