Accolade
Award

Dr. Jan Hu, an associate professor in the Department of Orthodontic and Pediatric Dentistry, is the recipient of the Gies Award for best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research during the preceding year. The award will be presented during the meetings of the International and American Associations for Dental Research in Baltimore in March.

Hu won the award for an article that appeared in the May 2004 issue of the publication entitled "Amelogeninp.M1T and p.W4S Mutations Underlying Hypoplastic X-linked Amelogenesis Imperfecta." The article explored the genes and mutations that cause defects in the formation of dental hard tissues, as well as mutations that cause some teeth not to develop at all.

Collaborating with Hu was Dr. James Simmer, associate professor in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences.
