News BriefsTax changes; W-4 information availableFor 2005, federal withholding tax tables have changed. The rates can be accessed via the University Payroll Office Web page, http://www.payroll.umich.edu, by selecting "Tax Calculation Help." Each federal and state exemption has increased from $3,100 to $3,200; however, the Michigan income tax rate remains 3.9 percent. Employees who wish to change the number of withholding allowances they claim must complete revised federal or state W-4 forms and submit them to the Payroll Office 15 days before a pay date for the change to take effect. Employees who claimed exempt status in 2004 should review their status and submit new W-4 forms as soon as possible. Exempt status automatically expires Feb. 15 if a new W-4 is not submitted. Information on obtaining W-4 forms and updating information via Wolverine Access is available by accessing the Payroll Web page and selecting "Forms/Tables," or by calling (734) 764-1485. Forms also are available at the University Payroll Office, G395 Wolverine Tower-Low Rise; Hospital Payroll, 2901 Hubbard, Ste. 1500; and from the HR Service Centers.
